Design Better. Write Better.

by Jason Francis Hunter on April 24, 2008

Naomi wants to play a game. I’m in. Here’s how it starts:

“So what do you actually do for a living?”

Design better. Write better.Well, in any other medium, I’d pull out my pompous sweater and begin ranting about how I’m a new breed of man and “what I do” encompasses something so large, not even I can put words around it. But, this blog is about two things — Designing better and writing better — and that, is where I’ll draw the line (for now). The following is what I do, here, at S&W.

What’s your game? What do you do?

I design — mostly ad banners, blog headers and logos. Occasionally, full-blown website design has been known to spout from my fingers. Until time permits, that will remain an anomaly — reserved for grand projects, projects that change lives, and…my own shit — I’m fastidiously self-serving.

I write — specializing in creating and optimizing website copy, feature articles, newsletters, email marketing campaigns, and SEO copy.

Why do you do it? Do you love it, or do you just have one of those creepy knacks?

Can I say both, sorta?

I adore it. Nothing pleases me more than creation and sharing that with people who have an equal appreciation.

I also have a knack, but it isn’t creepy. It’s more like a severe attention to detail, which I’ve developed so intensely that I can do it with only one brow furrowed and in less time than it takes a falcon to notice a mouse doing the Macarena on a 13-foot high boulder.

Who are your customers? What kind of people would need or want what you offer?

People with ideas, thought, pride, heart and passion. I work for people who believe in what they do.

What’s your marketing USP? Why should I buy from you instead of the other losers?

I care about the work I do. It is a part of me when I’m deep in the creation of it, and when I hand it over to you, it is a piece of the perfection I demand from myself — that fastidiousness I spoke of earlier. This also means that I care a great deal for you — I cannot do a work for someone, and have that work become a part of me without that regard.

Plus, I’m actually Robert Palmer. I faked my death in 2003 to become an internet sensation.

I know you
Were expecting a one night stand
When I refused
I knew you wouldn’t understand

I told you twice
I was only trying to be nice
Only trying to be nice
Ooh, I didn’t mean to turn you on

Comedy, I believe, is a universal language — and it radiates throughout my work.

What’s next for you? What’s the big plan?

Pinky: Gee, Brain, what are we going to do tonight?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky - try to take over the world!

That really is the plan. And, if I can’t do that through scribbles and words, well then, this world is shit, and I’m on the first starship to Mars.

Less dramatic, but just as earnest, a larger design company is in the works. As for copy writing, perhaps bigger things lie in hibernation, in fact, I’m certain of it. But, for now, freelancing project by project is the name of the game.

While I’m sure you said some very insightful things in your post, I have forgotten them all in the act of rushing to comment on how much I LOVE that P&TB quote. I lurve it.

Thanks for participating! Rock on!

“It is a part of me when I’m deep in the creation of it, and when I hand it over to you, it is a piece of the perfection I demand from myself…”

Oh, don’t I know that feeling–spending hours getting it just right so that when you deliver your product, you’re certain it was the best you could do at the time. This is and always has been me when I write for other people (blogging not necessarily included).

It’s great being anal about that stuff…the client thinks you really care loads for them, but really, I’m just demanding of myself. ;)

By the way, thanks for introducing me to Lightspeed Champion. Interesting stuff. :)

Hi, I’m here through Naomi’s blog — I just posted my response to her game and checking what others have to say. This was a tough challenge, wasn’t it?
I agree with you that it’s critical to care about the quality of our work and our customers. Keep up the good work!

The tough part was limiting what I do to a blog post instead of a book. ;)

My brain thinks he’s superman. Sucker.
