Anonymity.
If you’re going to do, or be, anything in the online world, anonymity is not very practical or even attainable for longer than it takes to load up Google.com and punch some keys. I found this out the hard way.
I was due to be married in April of 2003. My fiancé, who shall remain nameless, was a gorgeous young girl from Southern Brazil, Paraná to be exact, whom I met while on a backpacking tour through South America in early 2002. We met, she joined me on the rest of my tour, we fell in love, and she moved into my one bedroom apartment in Downtown Los Angeles. It was wonderful. But it didn’t last.
I told her I did textile design, which was true at the time, but I failed to tell her that wasn’t my only job.
The previous year a friend of mine got me into the whole “online money-making phenomenon,” by pitching the idea of selling my body via website subscription. For reasons I’ll leave out at this moment, I was feeling up for anything, plus, I was broke. A few clicks of the mouse and a dozen or so snaps of my digital camera later and HouseofVain.com was born. It did very well, hell, I could afford a backpacking trip through South America right?
About a month before my highly anticipated spring wedding, my fiancé stumbled across my provocative “second house”.
I came home from work, textiles not nude files, one afternoon and she was sitting on the couch with her father on one side, her mother on the other, and my laptop on the coffee table. HouseofVain was displayed proudly on the screen, like an unwanted pest squirming its way into your bedsheets and content with its new found warmth yet unaware of the terror its presence has brought to your once cozy and comfortable life.
I felt like saying, “Seriously guys, you could have waited until I came home to buy a subscription. You’re all practically family, I’d have given you a discount.” But all that came out was, “Surprise!”
Apparently keeping your underground pornographic escapades from your fiancé is grounds for her calling off the wedding, having her father shout foreign phrases in your face, and moving back to Brazil.
So how did she discover my shame? Turns out her brother was doing some background checking on me through internet searches, after all I was soon to be his brother-in-law. Apparently I did a lousy job at covering my trail and somehow he tied my name back to the site.
So, the moral of the story is this:
Anonymity online doesn’t exist. So be honest. And that my friends is what I will very humbly attempt to do. Starting now. ;o)

Who writes for Scribbles & Words?
I’m Jay. Sometimes I tell stories that aren’t entirely true (see story above). But they could be, and that’s what matters.
I’m what you would call a renaissance soul: someone who indulges in too many passions to choose just one. In this day and age, especially with the internet, such a person is right at home.
To name but a few interests, I’d say I’m a health and fitness enthusiast (studied culinary management at AI in Santa Monica and have taken the ACE personal trainer course), a music lover (studied guitar at Musicians Institute in Hollywood), an avid reader and above all, a new media devotee.
I’m very interested in the online world. My experience and passion ranges from fiddling with CSS code to guerrilla marketing, affiliate marketing, copy writing, digital art creation, online monetization strategies, blogging like a maniac and social media extravagance. Converting these passions into a substantial income is something I’m very dedicated to. I’m very excited you’ve decided to join me.
